Some of the more compelling novels in modern history began life as other forms – at least, these stories started out as movie or TV scripts and/or characters. Quite often, a studio will commission an author to adapt a script for an upcoming movie into novel form (the reverse of a screenwriter adapting a novel for the screen), or to create a story based in an already-established universe. A publisher may also reach out to a studio to obtain publishing rights to a particular copyrighted intellectual property if they believe stories set in that universe would be popular with their readers.
These are known as “media tie-ins,” and are marketed to fans in much the same way as any other merchandise or memorabilia. These novels and short stories offer the fans further insight into the universe and characters they already know from the movie or television show.
