A very sad day. Rush was one of my favorite bands. My cousin introduced me to them, and my musicianship and guitar playing were kicked up several notches.

Nice to see you Tribe. I'm taking it harder than I should considering I've never met him. 3 complete strangers having that much a place in my life is a bit odd, I think. I dissected every note on every album. Learned to play drums to Moving Pictures and Signals because I was too naïve at 14 to know that I couldn't learn to play drums starting with Rush. So I did. After that every other band was easy and usually boring.

Clarification: My cousin introduced me to LISTENING to them. I've never met them (though I've seen them three times in concert)

Yeah. When I started guitar, I was doing the standard rock work that my dad listened to, but when my cousin (who played bass) had me sit down and listen to Rush, I was completely blown away. Each member wasn't just a decent musician; they were masters of their instruments. Geddy's bass lines are freaky, and especially when you consider that he's singing over a lot of them, that's a very difficult thing to do. Alex, of course had great phrasing, chord voicing, and could rip a fast guitar solo when he wanted to. And Neil... yeah, you're right. Starting on Neil Peart for drums is like starting on Stephen Hawking for beginner's science. The man's rhythms and lyrical genius really were the backbone of that band.

Lots of good music memories associated with Rush. My dad (also deceased) was never really a big Rush fan, but he did like the song "Limelight" and taught me the solo. When I went to my cousin's house, I'd bring over a guitar magazine whenever a Rush song transcription was included, because the bass line would be in there as well, and he would eat up songs like Tom Sawyer and Distant Early Warning, so we could jam them together.

Rush should be required listening for any musician.
