  • Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker

Really surprised that there isn't a thread on Rise of Skywalker after almost 2 weeks. Didn't you guys see it? Not impressed and therefore can't be bothered to write it up?

Saw it with my daughter last Friday and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Not sure why there's so much criticism out there. Ok, maybe it could have been better but we thought it was pretty good.

I have no love whatsoever for Abrams' trilogy. I only went to see TRoS because my mother and mother-in-law wanted to see it, and my ticket was free. The movie was an attempt to salvage the mess that was seeded in The Force Awakens and came to fruition in The Last Jedi. I couldn't stand Rey's characterization as a Mary Sue--and yes, they tempered that perception a little bit in this film, but only slightly. I couldn't stand the ineptness often applied to Finn and Poe. I couldn't stand the bastardizing of the original characters, particularly Luke. I couldn't stand the fact that this story was ALREADY told, and told better, in the Expanded Universe, through the Legacy of the Force book series (which Abrams should have followed). I cannot stand the fact that Disney decided to ditch the Expanded Universe altogether, just because they wanted money above respect for the mythos. And I have a laundry list of other complaints as well.

If you liked it, Evertonian, then good for you. I will admit it was a step up from The Last Jedi in some ways, but as a whole it was a miserable ending to a miserable trio of films. Abrams has no sense of fidelity to his own film vision, let alone the franchise as a whole. Neither he nor Disney should have ever been allowed to touch Lucas' work. Ever.

As far as I'm concerned, this is not Star Wars. The Expanded Universe is.

Thanks for the reviews. I rarely go to the movies. It takes a lot for me to be motivated enough to pay to sit in a room full of strangers and typically having the movie interrupted by some of those strangers. I'll be waiting on this one to start streaming.

Just saw Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
I have to say it brought a very nice closure to the new trilogy as well as the other 8 films that preceded it.
Sure, there were elements in it that resembled its predecessors, but it was nice to see the "old" gang of 3 back (yes- Luke, Leia and Han) as well as the "new" gang of Rey, Poe and Finn. And the effects were quite impressive. I thought it was the strongest entry of the new trilogy, and had some effective "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" type moments.
My only criticism is that it moved so fast (with barely a breather) that I think more character development and less action scenes could have been added to the film. That would have brought it to a 3 hour mark instead of the 2 hour and 22 minute release, but I am sure fans would not complain about these additional scenes. Hopefully the Blu Ray release will have an extended version.
          My rating is 4.5/5.
